What all good background checks need to include is a “National Criminal History Check”. Bad news: its a myth. It does not exist and despite what any private background check provider tells you, they don’t have one, they have fabricated a search for marketing purposes. Yes the FBI has a background check that is the largest collection of criminal records in one location, but it is far from complete or error free and it is not available for private searches by would be employers. At ASG, we think this type of misrepresentation is one of the most dangerous and reckless attributes of the employee screening and background check industry.
All we can say about this gross misrepresentation is that if such a search existed, not only would our jobs be very easy, but the need for individual state searches and county level searches would be unnecessary. Being that only twenty or so states actually have accessible statewide criminal history searches, it is not likely that there will be such a tool available anytime soon.
